This Authentic Florida Key Lime Pie is one of the most delicious and tasty pies you will ever eat! It’s light, refreshing, and packed with flavor! The combination of a graham cracker crust with a sweet, creamy filling, topped with a bit of whipped cream, can’t be beaten! This pie is perfect for any holiday gathering, birthday, or really any time!
Oh my goodness, I’m so not kidding when I saw that this is probably one of the best things you will ever eat! I may be biased, but Key Lime Pie is one of the best pies and desserts ever. But I haven’t always felt that way. When I was younger the thought of Key Lime Pie slightly grossed me out. I figured it had to taste similar to lime jello or a fake lime flavor, and that didn’t sound appealing. However, when I met my husband, I quickly found out that his favorite dessert is…Key Lime Pie! And his favorite place just so happens to be the Florida Keys as well.
Life-Changing Pie
So, since I had never been to Florida at the time, we took a trip to the Florida Keys for our honeymoon. Of course, my hubby had me try an Authentic Key Largo Key Lime Pie. Honestly, I couldn’t believe how fresh, tangy, creamy, and light it was! I was expecting a fake lime taste, but I was pleasantly surprised! That was the moment I knew that key lime pie was forever going to be my favorite dessert as well! Overall, that trip was honestly life-changing, not because of the pie but because that was the start of our journey and instrumental in why we moved to Florida and are living here today.

If you have never been to the Florida Keys, I highly recommend you take a trip! It’s a beautiful paradise, and an experience you won’t want to miss! But if you want a taste of Florida, this pie recipe is the best place to start!
Authentic Florida Key Lime Pie Ingredients
- Cinnamon graham cracker crumbs
- Raw cane sugar
- Butter
- Canned sweetened condensed milk
- Egg yolks
- Fresh key lime juice
- Key lime zest
- Whipped cream
Key limes may not be as easy to find, so if you have to, you can use regular limes. Although I don’t recommend bottled juice, if you do have to use it, Nellie & Joe’s Key West Lime Juice is your best option.
Pie Making Equipment
- Blender or food processer
- 2 large mixing bowls
- Measuring Cups
- Zester and juicer
- Whisk
- 9-Inch pie plate
I list a blender or food processor because I always make my own graham cracker crumbs, and I find the easiest way to crush them finely is by using my Ninja Blender. I use one of the small smoothies attachments and break the graham crackers in half. It takes seconds to grind them up, so it’s a big time saver. Of course, you can buy graham cracker crumbs if you prefer! I also think investing in a zester and juicer for this pie is a great idea! If you’re using fresh lime juice, it’s somewhat of a pain to squeeze the limes by hand, so a manual press is helpful.
Freezing Key Lime Pie
If you want to pre-make this pie, you can easily bake it and store it in the freezer. You’ll want to let it cool completely after baking, and don’t add the whipped cream to the top. Once it’s cooled, carefully wrap it in aluminum foil or plastic wrap, and place it in a Ziploc freezer bag. I wouldn’t keep it in the freezer for longer than 3 months. Then once you’re ready to eat it, unthaw it in the fridge for a few hours.
If you’re like me and you enjoy pretty much anything with fresh lime juice, I have a feeling you will enjoy these Key Lime Chocolate Chip Muffins! They are a delicious snack and a bit healthier than a slice of pie.

Authentic Florida Key Lime Pie
Equipment
- Blender or food processer
- 2 Large mixing bowls
- Measuring Cups
- Zester and juicer
- Whisk
- 9-inch pie plate
Ingredients
Graham Cracker Crust Ingredients
- 1 1/4 Cups Cinnamon graham cracker crumbs 10 or 11 crackers
- 2 Tbsp Raw cane sugar
- 5 Tbsp Unsalted butter melted
Key Lime Filling Ingredients
- 1 14 oz Can sweetened condensed milk
- 4 Large Egg yolks
- 1 1/2 tsp Key lime zest
- 1/2 Cup + 2 Tbsps Fresh key lime juice 9-10 key limes
- 1 1/2 Cups Whipped cream topping or fresh whipped cream
Instructions
TO MAKE THE GRAHAM CRACKER CRUST:
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Crush the graham crackers in a food processor or blender. Melt the butter in the microwave in a microwave-safe dish. (Unless you have pre-bought crumbs)
- Stir together graham cracker crumbs, sugar, and butter in a large mixing bowl until evenly combined. Press the mixture evenly onto the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch pie plate.
- Bake the crust on the middle oven shelf for 10 minutes, then remove and let cool.
TO MAKE THE FILLING:
- Zest and juice the key limes.
- While the crust is baking, whisk together the condensed milk and egg yolks in a large mixing bowl until combined. Add the juice and zest and whisk by hand for 1 minute until it's slightly thickened and smooth.
- Pour the filling into the crust.
- Bake on the middle oven shelf for 15 minutes. Carefully transfer the pie to a cooling rack, and let sit until it reaches room temperature. Then refrigerate for at least 3 hours, or until chilled.
- Drop spoonfuls of whipped cream around the pie before serving.
Notes
- Make the graham cracker crumbs yourself by using a blender to grind up the graham crackers.
- This pie can be frozen after being baked and cooled. Just wrap it tightly in foil or plastic wrap and put it into a zip-top freezer bag. It will stay good for up to 3 months. Defrost in the fridge for a few hours when you’re ready to eat it.
- Fresh key lime juice is best for this recipe but you can also use regular limes in place of them. It will only take about 5 regular limes to have enough juice.
Whenever we visit the Keys I feel like we eat it at every meal! Such a delicious dessert and every restaurant seems to do it slightly differently!
Same here, Lindsay! It’s so good it’s hard not to eat it at every meal. 🙂
I’ve yet to visit Florida but am sure key limes are super tasty. This pie looks so good!

Authentic key lime pie is my mom’s favorite dessert in the whole world. I’ve saved this recipe because I’m *totally* making it to surprise her in the future. She’d be so excited!
I’m sure that your mom would love that, Stephanie! 🙂
Oh wow! I can not wait to make this. I didn’t know I loved Key Lime until about five years ago when we were in Key West and we tried these frozen key lime bars that had been dunked in chocolate. They were amazing! Thanks for this recipe!
Yes, those are amazing! Anything with key lime is a winner for me. Thanks for commenting, Gwen! 🙂

I’ve never tried an authentic Florida key lime pie. Sounds a bit involved, I hope I’ll be able to make it one day, lol!
I hope you will try it too, Kat! 🙂 It is easier than it sounds.
Saw this recipe in the middle of the night and it made me starving. The recipe looks easy but I think I can’t do this ugh
I’m sure you can make this, Meredith! It’s not hard at all. 🙂 I hope you’ll give it a try.
I can’t wait to make this at home!
Ok, this looks so good! Will be making this holiday season.
I’m glad you like the recipe, Alicia! 🙂
So funny that I’m seeing this today as we just got back from southern Florida yesterday! While we were there, my aunt and uncle bought a Key Lime Pie from Publix, but had I had this recipe, we could have made one from scratch (which I’m sure is WAY better!).
That’s a funny coincidence! Publix’s key lime pie is okay, but I will agree that homemade is so much better. 🙂
Ok, I’ve never been a fan of Key Lime Pie- BUT you make this sound amazinggggg. I love lemon flavored desserts so maybe I need to give this one another try!
Please do, Sarah! I hope it will change your mind on key lime pie. 🙂
I’m with you – key lime pie is one of my all-time favorite desserts ever! My Gram made it from scratch and it was pure heaven. 🙂 I think the trickiest part of this recipe for me may actually be finding key limes in New England rather than “regular” limes. I’m sure it would be worth the extra effort to find them though – I know there’s a difference!
That’s a wonderful memory, Katrina! I hope you will be able to find some key limes and recreate this recipe. 🙂
Yum! I love key lime pie and this is something I like to order for dessert when dining out. I think I might have to make a pie for my family.
I’m so glad you found this recipe, Gina! I hope you and your family enjoy it. 🙂
I love anything lime…including key lime pie. Have never made one myself, tho. This looks absolutely delicious and so glad my local grocer carries key limes most of the time!
I’m excited you’ll get to try out making your own! Enjoy, Linda! 🙂
This pie looks delicious and easy to make! I can’t wait to try it for my next party!
Thanks, Lauren! It will be a hit at your party! 🙂
You know, just like you said, the thought of key lime pie never sounding very appealing to me. However, you made it sound so good that I may need to give it a try.
You definitely need to try it, Deshena! I’m sure you will find it’s much better than it sounds!
I can’t say that I’ve ever tried an authentic Florida key lime pie before but this looks absolutely amazing! I also enjoyed reading about how you came to love this dessert. Thanks so much for sharing the recipe – I can’t wait to try it!
Thank you, Amanda! I’m glad that you enjoyed my post, and I hope you will love this pie! 🙂
This is one of my favourite desserts but I’ve never made it. Saving to make when I want a treat! I live in Canada and getting key limes isn’t always available so I’ll give it a try with regular limes if I can’t find. Thanks for the recipe!
Thank you, Yolanda! I hope you’ll still get a chance to try it without key limes. 🙂
Love key lime. Many people are not aware of the different kinds of limes. Love that this recipe uses actual key limes YAY!! Sounds lit!
Thank you, LaRena! I’m glad you like the recipe!
